We interview and get to know the CUTE couple behind SHARED SPACE, because #1 they have an amazing studio in the busy and bustling neighbourhood of Causeway Bay, on Hong Kong island AND #2 because we both have a “SHARED” love for gradients & specifically the colours ROSE QUARTZ & SERENITY, hence why their studio exclusively has our MATS!!! A whole studio filled with that one coloured mat….. pure MAGIC!!! So of course, this studio deserves, a big, fun interview!
Q1: So why the name….”SHARED SPACE”?
The name SharedSpace came to us in a word association brainstorm, and just made sense to us.
To us, ‘SHARED’ symbolises the welcoming of different perspectives and disciplines into our community, seeing that there beauty, and room for all sorts of different practices that add joy to one’s life in different ways.
’SPACE’, first and foremost refers literally to our physical space, our studio. But going deeper, we value the space in our hearts to love compassionately, the space to mediate between the personal and interpersonal, the private and communal, and lastly… the space between our thoughts, quietening the mind.
We absolutely love our Rose Quartz&Serenity mats. As SharedSpace was first under construction, we hung out at our friend Nikita’s beautiful studio, Kita Yoga, a lot to stay sane. That’s when we first came across the RR-OM mats. When we found that RR-OM had a mat with hues of pink and blue, we were certain right away that we wanted to collaborate, stock and use them! Our SharedSpace logo, merchandise and graphics are all based on pink and blue hues. Our inspiration was based on the changing sky, changing seasons, a blend of Yin and Yang. We were also taught by one of our mentors that Pink represents Unconditional Love, and Blue for Compassion. We were taught to protect ourselves energetically by envisioning ourselves in pink and blue bubbles to protect our aura, our psyche. So when we found RecklessRed-OM, we thought it was the perfect addition to SharedSpace. An added layer of energetic protection to our students when they take our Yoga or Meditation Classes.
We also love working with small, local brands. To us, it’s these small companies that create high quality products and services, with a lot of heart and thought put into everything they do. SharedSpace is a small, growing business as well so we believe by supporting others, we will in turn be supported. We’ve also loved collaborating with Alessandra and Miklos, it’s so cool that there are more and more couples creating brands, working together, blending both romance with creative work. It’s so powerful when we find duos who work and create in harmony. People like this inspire us!
Q3: What has it been like opening a new business together?
Things have grown and changed so much for us this year. We found SharedSpace’s location in January, which is right opposite of Times Square’s Lane Crawford in Causeway Bay and the ball’s been rolling ever since. From the conception of SharedSpace to having been open for nearly 4 months now, we do our best to balance life between the personal and public, as co-directors of SharedSpace, teachers, movers, and content creators.
Q4: What does a regular day look like for Clare and Aaron?
On a daily basis, we have so many different roles and personalities. We are co-directors of SharedSpace, and up until now have been a 2-man team. So we are behind all operations for the studio, so that includes marketing, organising events with our partners and teachers, and tons of meetings. We also teach our own classes, and create our own material (class, video, written). So it’s been quite challenging, building a bigger brand (SharedSpace) that helps our entire community, and also building up our own personal brands
I (Clare) would love to be writing more, teaching lots of Katonah Yoga, and creating my own dances.
Aaron actually also directs Urban Freeflow, an online Parkour information channel, and is also a stuntman and model.
So as our operations team grows, we’d love to let go of operational responsibilities so that we can do more of what we love to do. This startup period of being behind operations has been absolutely necessary and very educational, as it’s important for me to know things like how to make quick changes to the website, and systemise our workshop procedures. We’re also really happy for the next chapter to come. :).
Our RoseQuartz&Serenity yoga mats from our OMBRÉ COLLECTION are available in their store! Go check them out if you haven’t touched or got your hands on a RECKLESSRED-OM yoga mat yet! Made of natural tree rubber with a “vegan” suede top layer that is so smooth on the hands and feet, yet provides the perfect grip for those sweaty yoga practices. Enjoy deep inhalations without having to worry about breathing in nasty chemicals from your mat! Scent-free & Clean!
Whenever I’m back in Hong Kong, I love visiting this studio and dropping into any class that they run!
DIVERSITY BRINGS IMMUNITY
– being open and learning from all sorts of disciplines adds to one’s practice. Be it a yogi learning different styles of yoga, or a more diverse movement practitioner learning to dance, basic acrobatics and strength-train in a combined and holistic way, by nature of exposing oneself to more, one grows.
EVERYONE HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER
– There are golden nuggets in every single person, every kind of movement practice. Both Aaron and I have our own practices, me more in yoga, and Aaron more in acrobatics and parkour, but at the same time we embrace differences in people. We like being able to communicate with our teachers at SharedSpace about what they’re passionate about, because we believe supporting them in doing what they love doing makes them, and in turn the rest of our community, stronger. One of our teachers, Jessica Lee, is very devoted to her AcroYoga practice, so we enjoy learning from her when we train together.”
Move a little more + Love a little more!
